GE South African Technologies (GESAT), GE Transportation’s entity in South Africa, announced that it has signed a landmark contract with Transnet Limited to supply Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) with 100 locomotives. TFR is South Africa's state-owned rail freight logistics utility; Transnet Limited is its parent company. Ten of the locomotives will be manufactured in Erie and Grove City, USA and 90 will be manufactured locally at Transnet Rail Engineering’s site in South Africa with kits provided by GE Transportation.

GE Transportation has announced that the first Evolution® Series locomotive has been assembled in a new locomotive plant in Astana, Kazakhstan. On July 3, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, officially opened the plant that assembles GE Evolution Series locomotives to serve railroad customers in Kazakhstan and the surrounding region. Today, just five months later, the first locomotive has been successfully assembled and celebrated during an official ceremony at the Astana plant in the presence of Kazakh Prime Minister Karim K. Massimov and GE Transportation President and CEO Lorenzo Simonelli.

GE Transportation announced that it has reached an agreement with CSR Qishuyan Locomotive Co., Ltd. to provide 300 locomotive assemblies for China HXN5 Mainline locomotives produced by CSR Qishuyan with Evolution® Series diesel engines. The agreement helps to sustain close to 1,200 high-tech jobs in the U.S. The announcement was made as part of "GE's Clean Technology Week in China" activities. PowerHaul Locomotive

Freightliner Group Ltd. and GE Transportation announced that Freightliner has taken delivery of the first PowerHaul locomotives – introducing state-of-the-art technology to the UK’s rail freight market.

Representing GE Transportation's entry to the UK and European marketplace, the PowerHaul locomotives were manufactured in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA where comprehensive testing was completed. The locomotives were shipped from Virginia on 23 October.

GE Transportation has recently announced plans to build a $100 million state-of-the-art manufacturing plant for advanced storage batteries. As the leading producer of diesel-electric locomotives, GE has a rich history of delivering breakthrough technologies that are today commonplace in the rail industry.

GE has invested more than $150 million to develop advanced battery technologies, including a high energy-density sodium-based chemistry battery that will provide energy storage for a variety of applications, including GE Transportation's ecomagination certified Evolution Hybrid Locomotive, mining truck drive system and tugboat electrification.
