GE Unveils the First Tier 4 Heavy-Haul Locomotive

GE Transportation unveiled the prototype for its next Evolution® Series Locomotive that will decrease key emissions by more than 70 percent and save railroad customers more than $1.5 billion in infrastructure and operational costs.

GE expects that the locomotive will be the first in the industry to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) stringent “Tier 4” emission standards, which call for the single-largest emission reduction in the tiered program’s timeline.

GE Mining Completes Acquisition of Fairchild International

GE Mining announced today it has completed the acquisition of the assets of Fairchild International, a leading manufacturer of underground mining vehicles located in Glen Lyn, Virginia.   The new legal business name for the acquisition is GE-Fairchild LLC.

 GE Mining, a business unit of GE Transportation, utilizes the people, technologies, and products from across GE to help its customers solve their toughest mining challenges. GE Mining helps mines work better by providing innovative solutions in critical areas such as power, water and productivity.

GE Transportation Reports Strong Second Quarter Earnings

GE’s Transportation business generated strong results through the second quarter 2012 driven by continued infrastructure growth in the markets in which the company operates. 

GE Transportation’s second quarter 2012 revenues were $1.6 billion, up 27% year-over-year. 

Segment profits for 2Q in 2012 were $282 million, up 58% from $178 million in the second quarter 2011.  GE Transportation’s orders in the second quarter rose 2% to $1.4 billion, driven by higher locomotive orders in North America.

GE to Expand Battery Start-Up in New York

GE announced July 10 that it will expand its new, advanced manufacturing battery factory in Schenectady, New York to increase production of the new Durathon battery products, which are half the size of conventional lead acid batteries but last ten times longer.

The breakthrough technology, developed at GE‘s Global Research Center in nearby Niskayuna, NY, will provide reliable and cost-effective energy storage options for a broad range of GE customers globally, including telecom and utility operators. GE announced that on top of its $100 million initial investment in battery technology, it will invest an additional $70 million to expand the Schenectady plant, effectively doubling production and adding 100 new jobs, which will bring the total factory workforce to 450 when at full capacity.
