The Electronic AdvantageElectric drives require no mechanical gear shifting throughout the vehicle speed range. Current and voltage provide the power to the traction motor to deliver the required torque and speed to the motorized wheels while the motor field static exciter to the traction motor provides smooth dynamic application of power. Built-in traction control algorithms optimize drive system performance. Dynamic retarding reduces wear on the truck's primary braking system. Electric drive systems also offer continuous retarding by using the traction motors as generators. In this way, kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy and dissipated as heat in a self-ventilated resistor assembly. | |
