GE Energy Storage Signs Deal with Safaricom

GE Energy Storage announced a deal this week to supply Durathon Batteries to Safaricom, a telecommunications company, in Kenya. The batteries will enable the Safaricom network to run efficiently - even during power outages that continue to be a critical challenge in all of Africa.

“Our technology provides an incredible value to ensure uninterrupted mobile service for millions of Africans.  Durathon Batteries provide reliable back-up power to reduce the downtime of cell towers when outages occur.  In Safaricom’s highest revenue sites, Durathon Batteries reduce downtime by 79%. Our batteries can easily be installed on rooftops, since they weigh less than traditionally-used lead-acid batteries.  This is crucial, since Safaricom’s highest revenue sites are located in the most populated areas of Nairobi,” said Prescott Logan, the General Manager of GE Energy Storage.

The Other Side of Mobile #MWC13

GE Energy Storage is in Barcelona this week for GSMA’s Mobile World Congress.  You might be wondering what an energy storage business is doing at the same trade show as companies like Samsung and Nokia.  The shiny, advanced products that many companies launch at the Mobile World Congress require reliable networks in order to actually use for communication.  In many rural and developing areas of the world, an unreliable grid and extreme temperatures may affect the performance of cell towers.

That’s where GE Energy Storage and Durathon Batteries come to the rescue.  Our telecom product enables fuel savings and reliable power availability for cell tower operators. We power the cell towers that are the foundation of mobile communications and what GSMA dubbed “the mobile economy.”

Growing an Industrial Internet

With 10,000 sensors spread throughout its manufacturing facility, GE Energy Storage can track virtually every aspect of production using a high-speed, internal Ethernet network.  It’s all part of GE’s plan to invest $1.5 billion company wide to maximize efficiency and manufacturing performance by connecting proprietary software to the larger internet.  Recently, MIT’s Technology Review took a closer look.
