An Update on the Evolution® Series Tier 4 Locomotive

November 20, 2013

One of the items we’ve been discussing while attending the Railway Interchange 2013 is our progress on the Evolution® Series Locomotive for heavy-haul freight meeting EPA “Tier 4” emission requirements. We’re happy to unveil the next Evolution® Series Tier 4 engine. GE expects that the engine will be the first mainline locomotive to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) stringent “Tier 4” emission standards, which call for the single-largest emission reduction in the rail sector’s history.

The new locomotive will meet this standard without the use of aftertreatment. GE Transportation has invested $600 million in the Evolution Series since its introduction in 2005. GE Transportation has started field testing a Tier 4 compliant locomotive along 100 miles of track through western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Additional field testing will take place in the near future.
