- Introducing RailConnect 360 Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) and ShipperConnect software
- Solutions for railroads that lower customer maintenance and inventory costs, increase revenue
- Solutions for rail shippers that provide increase shipment visibility, automate operations, and manage inventory
Chicago, October 9, 2013 - (NYSE:GE) - Railroads and rail shippers today face ongoing challenges to lower inventory and maintenance costs, while also increasing efficiencies to minimize unplanned downtime — ultimately leading to higher revenue. To address these challenges, GE Transportation, a unit of GE (NYSE:GE) and one of the world’s leading suppliers to the railroad industry, unveiled its RailConnect 360 Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) and ShipperConnect software at the second annual Minds + Machines Conference.
“Our focus remains on developing solutions to address the rail industry’s most pressing issues,” said Russell Stokes, CEO of GE Transportation. “The debut of our RailConnect 360 Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) and ShipperConnect software technologies further illustrate our unwavering commitment to leveraging intelligent machines to deliver breakthrough levels of efficiency and productivity for our customers.”
By collecting and analyzing performance data during locomotive operations, GE Transportation’s RailConnect 360 M&D software solution automates diagnostics and root cause analysis to enable optimal and proactive maintenance. The result is improved reliability and availability, ultimately delivering critical time and cost-savings. On top of providing locomotive status and performance information, M&D solutions enable advanced planning of resources and materials, informed decision making for building train consists, and running and routing locomotives en-route.
“GET’s RailConnect 360 Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) software services has increased quality repairs and improved track availability and shop throughput at Vale. However, the ambition is even higher: we want to expand our condition monitoring program and focus on predictive analytics, taking benefits of a stochastic approach to surpass the barriers of real time and have failures predicted weeks in advance. From our standpoint, GE is the right partner to reach that, since GE bundles all resources and vision to imagine and create it,” Rodolfo Frederico VALE Mining & Logistics Global Procurement General Manager.
GE Transportation also unveiled the cloud-based ShipperConnect software suite that allows rail shippers and terminal operators to automate operations, manage inventory and control transportation costs. The system includes business intelligence reporting tools that help customers make better decisions and respond faster to dynamic market conditions.
Launch customer Fairmount Minerals, one of the largest producers of industrial sand in North America, is implementing ShipperConnect software at 49 locations to improve inventory management, increase railcar utilization and meet customer commitments to deliver a continuous supply of sand to the shale basins for crude oil drilling operations.
The future is bright for this year’s launch technologies. At last year’s Minds+Machines Conference, GE Transportation announced its Rail Network Optimization solution, which includes Movement Planner System, a real-time network planning and optimization system that is helping Norfolk Southern create network efficiencies and reducing operating costs.
Based on a joint study conducted earlier this year on key Georgia Division corridors, the company has seen improvements that include a 10% increase in network velocity, a 50% reduction in expired crews and significant improvements in on-time performance.
GE Transportation’s Minds + Machine’s solutions are part of a broader company announcement of 14 new Industrial Internet Predictivity data and analytics solutions and technologies that enable railroads, airlines, hospitals, utilities and oil and gas operators to achieve outcomes such as no unplanned downtime, increased productivity, preventive maintenance and lower fuel costs.
